Using the space in alcoves is a great way to create built-in storage or display space.  Shelves can be made from solid wood, wood veneer or have a painted finish.  They can be chunky and fitted on hidden supports or thin and supported on timber bearers attached to the sides of the alcove.  Cupboard doors can also be added if you want to keep things out of sight.
